History
The Royal Red Cross was established on 27 April 1883 by Queen Victoria, who first awarded it to Florence Nightingale. Initially the award only had one class, that of 'Member,' but a second, lower class of 'Associate' was established in November 1915, following World War One. The medal is a military decoration awarded in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth for exceptional services in military nursing.
