One of a set of ten posters: 'The Power of an Idea. Henry Dunant, a young Swiss businessman, was appalled by the suffering of soldiers wounded in the Battle of Solferino in 1859. He wrote a book called 'A Memory of Solferino' and put forward two ideas. Firstly, each country should create a voluntary relief society of trained members to care for the wounded in times of war. Secondly, the wounded and those helping them should be protected by international treaty. This led to the founding of the Red Cross in 1863.The emblem of the Red Cross was adopted as a uniform sign of protection. Later the Red Cross extended its role to help victims of natural diaster.Today the Red Cross is the world's largest voluntary organisation for the relief of pain and suffering. There are Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in nearly 140 countries.' Ref. 3347
