History
On 9 September 1939, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, launched a British Red Cross and St John Appeal to raise funds for sick and wounded soldiers and prisoners of war. It became the largest charitable fund of its day.
Thousands of volunteers arranged fundraising events, organised house-to-house collections and packed prisoner of war parcels. By 1946, the appeal had raised over £54 million (£2.5 billion today).
