History
Lady Irene Haig was born on 7 October 1919 and served with the British Red Cross during the Second World War. On 4 October 1945, she married Gavin Astor, later the 2nd Baron Astor of Hever. Upon his father's death in 1971, her husband succeeded to the barony and Irene became the Baroness Astor of Hever (addressed as Lady Astor). Baroness Astor was President of the Kent Branch from 1976-1982 and County Branch Honorary Vice-President from 1987 until her death in 2001.

Following the outbreak of war in August 1914, the British Red Cross formed the Joint War Committee with the Order of St John. They pooled their fundraising activities and resources and worked together under the protective emblem of the red cross. The Joint War Committee organised volunteers alongside technical and professional staff. It also supplied the machinery
and mechanisms to provide services in Britain and in the conflict areas of Europe, the Middle East, Russia and East Africa.

When war was declared in September 1939 and the Joint War Organisation came together once more to carry out extensive services at home and abroad for the sick and wounded, prisoners of war and civilians needing relief.
