History
On 26 December 2004, a massive earthquake occured in the Indian Ocean, it's epicentre off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake generated large Tsunami waves which deverstated coastal communities in 14 countries and killed an estimated 227,898 people.
The British Red Cross' Asia Earthquake and Flood Appeal was launched on the day of the disaster, Boxing Day 2004, and raised £26 million. An additional £59 million was given to the British Red Cross by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).
