History
The Ebola outbreak that began in West Africa in March 2014 became the deadliest outbreak of the disease in recorded history, with more than 10,000 people losing their lives. The countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone were hit particularly hard by the crisis. Red Cross and Red Crescent teams delivered medical care and lifesaving aid to halt the spread of the disease. Particularly valuable was the work of local Red Cross volunteers in mapping rural areas to aid with contact tracing.
