Description
Oil painting in large moulded plaster gold painted frame entitled 'Lady of the Black Horse' depicting Mrs M A St Clair Stobart and the Serbian Retreat, Sept-Dec 1915. Mrs St Clair Stobart led a relief hospital unit from Britain to Serbia in April 1915. Based at Kragujevac, her tented hospital gave aid through a typhoid epidemic and provided roadside dispensaries for the country people. She is portrayed here leading a mobile hospital column in support of the retreating Serbian Army. The retreat, in bitter winter weather, took place through the mountains of Montenegro and northern Albania to the coast.
