Some of the main events during 1966 were: an earthquake in Turkey which saw the launching of the first national appeal by the Disasters Emergency Committee; responding to the Aberfan disaster; former Branches in Kenya and Zambia becoming national societies; and approval for the Committee in the British Virgin Islands to become a Branch of the British Red Cross.
