Some of the main events during 1970 were: centenary celebrations for the British Red Cross; the launching of appeals by the Disasters Emergency Committee in response to flooding in Romania, earthquakes in Turkey and Peru and following a cyclone in East Pakistan; the former Branch in Malawi being recognised as a national society; the resignation of the Duke of Gloucester as chairman of the council and appointment as vice-president of the Society; and the retirement of Lord Inchyra as chaiman of the executive committee to be replaced by Sir Evelyn Shuckburgh.
