The magazine was started in July 1993 with the aim of sharing news and views from Red Cross shops across the country.The Head of Retail, John Tough, stated in the first edition that the magazine would feature financial results, handy hints, news about volunteers, a letter section and information on new shops. The first edition was entitled 'Shop News' but the publication was named 'Shop Around' from the second edtion onwards. The format of the magazine was changed in 2002 for the 36th edition and a special fortieth edition was published in the summer of 2003.
