Description
Issue 1 of The New Voices Newspaper was published by the British Red Cross Society in June and July 2005. A free bi-monthly newspaper for refugees and asylum seekers in Scotland, it offered a unique service and was designed to be unbiased and aid communication within these communities. Feature articles included stories from Refugee Week 2005, an Oxfam Mori Poll and an article marking a year since the opening of Edinburgh’s Refugee Centre.

New Voices was distributed through drop-in-centres in Glasgow City Council and Glasgow’s Housing Association and captures something of what it was like to be a refugee in Scotland at the time.

There are sections on a variety of stories in Issue 1, one being the British Red Cross’ International Tracing and Message Service which aims to restore and maintain contact between families searching for missing relatives separated by war and disaster. Refugee Week 2005 coincided with World Refugee Day in the same year; the theme of the week was persecution to help people understand victims, bringing greater awareness of the causes of asylum.

With the Oxfam Mori Poll piece, New Voices delves into asylum seekers’ representation in the Scottish media, since 93% of Scots used media to form their knowledge and understanding of asylum issues. 51% of Scottish adults disagreed that most reporting was fair and accurate, with 27% agreeing reporting was accurate and fair.

I was intrigued to find that the British Red Cross Society produced and published a free newspaper to inform and help refugees and asylum seekers integrate in Scottish society. The stories featured, really grasped how newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers were welcomed within communities and with the Red Cross’ support. Public opinion on refugees and asylum seekers definitely seemed to be a challenging issue and it was interesting to see the study into media representation and public understanding of issues relating to refugees.
