History
In 1891 agents of Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company were granted exclusive mineral rights in what was known as Matabeleland. It became a British protectorate and was renamed Rhodesia, with insurrections by the native population occurring until 1904.
During an insurrection in 1896 the National Society offered assistance to the Army Medical Department, sending two surgeons, William Greenwood Sutcliffe and William Redpath, to Rhodesia.
