The medal was struck by the Royal Mint in celebration of the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. It was given as a personal souvenir from Her Majesty The Queen. UK and Commonwealth citizens were eligible to receive this medal.
Recipients included members of the Royal Family and Royal Household, public servants, government officials, members of the armed forces and police. Many British Red Cross volunteers were also awarded the medal.
