Description
This object is an example of a British Red Cross Food Parcel delivered by the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) to communities in Syria. They are packed by volunteers in Beirut before they are shipped to Syria where the SARC keep them in centralised warehouses. Then, the food parcels are distributed to individual towns when the SARC can confirm they are safe to travel to that town.
Each parcel contains a combination of long lasting and nutritious food including rice, sugar, tea, oil, lentils and beans. A single parcel is designed to support a family of five for a month - alongside fresh food available locally. Food parcels such as these are utilised in numerous war-torn countries and the contents are specific to each nation.
These boxes are an excellent example of the lengths the British Red Cross will go to, to provide communities with basic requirements such as nutrition. The energy that is put into each box is incredible, from the planning of the ingredients to be both long-lasting but also nutritious, to the volunteers who pack the boxes in Beirut, to transporting the boxes to the SARC. I think this individual box exemplifies the dedication and spirit of the British Red Cross.
