Description
Wendy wanted the EmpowHER programme to give young women confidence in whatever situation. "Empowering young women to have a voice is really important to me, and I think these groups gave them confidence. That's why for the EmpowHER quilt, I chose the quote 'somewhere inside all of us is the power to change the world'. It is inside all of us, but we need the confidence to do that. I really wanted to pick something that showed yes this was a project about women, but it's all of us that make a difference. That's why I chose to include the image of the world."

The background of the Earth was also important for Wendy in representing the global issues that relate to women in countries around the world. "I wanted to make sure that it covered everyone. I liked the image of the whole world because it's not just young women here in the UK. Women around the world are under-represented. If women have the confidence, they can battle against stuff, so [the quote] really resonated with me."

History
Wendy, Youth Development Manager for the British Red Cross, was one of the key people who helped create the EmpowHER programme. To shape the programme, Wendy focused on listening to what young women said were their challenges. She explained that she "found it really inspirational to hear from groups of young women at different events, and actually, some of the challenges I faced as a teenager, which is a long time ago, are still the same."
