History
Following her accession to the throne in 1952, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became patron and president of the British Red Cross. The patronage was announced on 5 Dec 1952.
During the coronation, 1,500 members of the British Red Cross were on duty and dealt with 1,089 injuries. Junior members from each of the Dominions and Overseas Branches were invited to the UK for the coronation.
Wendy Englefield from Hampshire was chosen to represent the Junior Red Cross in the service at Westminster Abbey. "The Queen looked wonderfully beautiful", she said, "and moved down the Abbey with great dignity." Wendy had a perfect seat to watch the procession and said that the whole scene '[was] like a fairy-tale'.
