History
Queen Victoria lay the foundation stone for the Royal Victoria Hospital in Netley, which included a British Red Cross hutted hospital on the site.
Queen Victoria was the first patron of the British Red Cross when the organisation was formed in 1870. In 1877, she wrote ‘Most sincerely does the Queen wish the Red Cross Society every possible success and will be thankful for any future account'.
