Description
A hand-written letter, written by Florence Nightingale as dated 5th March, 1861. The letter is addressed to a Mr Rawlinson, consisting of three pages of writing on both sides. A typed transcript is included, duplicating the contents of the letter in full. The letter has since been placed in a wooden frame by a previous owner, with the initials FN emblazoned on the front.
A central figurehead within Victorian Medical Society, the letter is emblematic of the vigorous medical reforms that Florence Nightingale helped to spearhead, specifically in relation to hospital sanitation. In this instance, the subject of Nightingale’s correspondence here predominantly relates to matters of ventilation and the issue of polished floors, with the letter strongly rebuking Mr Rawlinson’s approach to both within a medical context.
As an individual whose career remains steeped in historical significance, I chose this particular item on account of the valued insight it offers, not only in regards to Florence Nightingale’s character, but also in the manner of her formal conduct with others as a prominent figure in the Victorian medical community.
