Ceremonial key used by Princess Mary at the opening ceremony of the headquarters of the Flintshire branch of the British Red Cross.
Handwritten note inside the lid reads: 'HRH The Princess Royal commandant-in-chief opened with this key the Flintshire branch headquarters on April 27th 1963. The key was given to the branch after the opening.'

History
Princess Mary, at the age of 17, undertook an active role in helping those in need during the First World War. She visited hospitals and welfare organisations and worked as a VAD at the Great Ormond Street Hospital. In 1926, she became the first commandant-in-chief of British Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachments.
