Description
Empty packet of Huntley & Palmers Biscuits (box has been squashed). Plain biscuits were not sent at first, because camp rations were then providing sufficient carbohydrates. Following complaints about shortage of bad quality of camp bread, and experiments in methods of dispatching bread during January to June, 1940, it was decided that biscuits were the only practicable solution. Varieties finally selected, because of their sustainability as a substitute for bread and as a hard food for the teeth, were: Service ration (England), and "Healthy Life" and McVitie an Price's iron ration (Scotland). Calcium added to the flour used in their manufacture from May, 1943, onwards.
