History
In 1917, King George V created an Order to honour those who had served non-combatant roles during the First World War. This was the first time women were honoured on such a wide scale, and many British Red Cross women volunteers were given this award.

King George V became patron of the British Red Cross in 1910, and Queen Mary became president of the charity in 1925.

King George VI became patron of the British Red Cross in 1936. As Duke of York, he had formerly been chairman of the Council.
