History
In 1949 the Ministry of Defence asked the British Red Cross to provide volunteers for the Civil Defence Service. The British Red Cross began to train many of its volunteers in Civil Defence using handbooks and pamphlets produced by the Home Office. Volunteers were trained in first aid and rescue, different types of warfare, and welfare subjects such as evacuation and emergency feeding. These models were used in training courses.
