History
The medical loan service began in 1919 when the British Red Cross decided to lend surplus equipment, such as wheelchairs and crutches used during the First Word War, to people who could not afford to purchase these items. This service continues today to lend wheelchairs and other mobility aids to people in need.
Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the British Red Cross has supplied wheelchairs to more than 30 hospitals up across the UK, including the Nightingale Hospital in Birmingham. We have also been using our wheelchairs to help people get home after their hospital treatment.
