History
The Balkan War Medal was instituted in 1913. Awarded to members of British Red Cross units who served in Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, Servia or Turkey during the Turco-Balkan war (1912-1913) or the Balkan Allies War (1913). Awards were also granted to a number of other persons, mainly nationals of the five countries, who gave help to the units. 196 of these medals were awarded to British Red Cross members and 72 were awarded to others. On a number of the badges awarded to Turkish nationals, the red cross was replaced by a red crescent.
