History
King George VI medal was instituted in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of George VI. The medal was awarded as a souvenir to members of the Royal Family and Royal Household, dignitaries, members of the armed forces, government officials and civic leaders, amongst others. Many British Red Cross volunteers also received the medal.
King George VI became patron of the British Red Cross in 1936. As Duke of York, he had formerly been chairman of the Council.
