History
The Order of St John is a British royal order of chivalry first constituted in 1888 by royal charter from Queen Victoria, although it dates back much further to the Knights Hospitaller in the Middle Ages. The Order is well known for the founding of health organisations. The St John Ambulance Association was founded in 1877 to provide first aid training and the St John Ambulance Brigade was founded in 1887 and provided uniformed medical staff at public events. In 1968, the two were merged into the present foundation. The British Red Cross and the Order of St John have a long association, having worked together under the Red Cross emblem in both World Wars.
