Description
A black and white photograph taken in 1916, depicting a unit of VADS – a Voluntary Aid Detachment of nurses - before their departure for Salonika (modern day Thessaloniki) in Greece. The VADS are all dressed in outdoor uniforms and most of them wear gabardine caps. They are greeted by Sir Arthur Stanley, chairman of the Executive Committee, and Lady Ampthill, wife of lord Ampthill, before their departure.
This was one of the many occasions of self-sacrifice from the VADS, especially in a time and place like Salonika, which was a land of harsh terrain and had an ongoing war, preceding the First World War and going back to the Balkan wars. This was a land in turmoil with multiple fronts and multiple armies, creating an endless supply of missing and wounded soldiers, and leaving behind countless stories of the heroism and sacrifice of the VADS.
Audio recording by Leo Mitrakos (Volunteer), Edinburgh.
