Description
The photograph was donated by Mrs Nancy Perry of West Sussex, she was the little girl, then Nancy Allan, aged 3, in the centre of the picture with her aunt (standing right) and Miss Mollie Hinton-Knight, daughter of the Mayor of Camberwell. They were collecting for the Mayor of Camberwell's Red Cross Fund with her splendid ambulance. Nancy writes 'My mother was also given permission to take me into the wounded soldiers' wards in hospitals, to hand to them cigarettes; my little ambulance was filled with cigarettes by my mother (we had a tobacconist!). The soldiers, a few were able to move about, would pick me up and sit me on their knees, needless to say I was very shy!'
