Some of the main events during 1985 were: the appointment of the Countess of Limerick as chairman of the council and John Burke-Gaffney as director general; responding to severe drought and famine in Africa; responding in Bangladesh following a cyclone; responding in Columbia following the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano; and the former Branch in St Kitts and Nevis becomeing and independent National Society.
