History
In 1897 religious tension between the Muslim and Christian populations on the island of Crete led to the loss of military control by the Ottoman forces and a war between Turkey and Greece.

The National Society enquired into offering assistance but as many other Red Cross societies had already dispatched personnel the National Society offered financial aid to the Turkish authorities through the British Ambassador, Sir Philip Currie and to the Greek authorities through Sir Edwin Egerton.

However, the National Society decided on this occasion that as there were a large number of refugees the public need was greater than the military need, and so offered their co-operation to the Grosvenor House Fund to help to distribute food through the assistance of Frank Noel.
