History
On 11 January 1879 war began between the British and the Zulu due to continued border disputes between the Afrikaners of Transvaal and the Zulu. The British High Commissioner demanded that the Zulu king, Cetshwayo, disband his army which he refused, and the Zulu made a surprise attack at Lsandhlwana, killing 800 British soldiers. The war ended on 1 September after Cetshwayo was captured.

During this conflict the National Society played a minor role as much of the medical work was undertaken by the Army Medical Department. However, the National Society did commit to providing any additional luxuries that may be needed, and to offer warm clothing to those wounded returning to England during the winter.
