Description
This pocket-sized, pale blue, First Aid Manual was printed by the British Red Cross in 1912 and written by the honorary Surgeon-Colonel, James Cantlie. It may be plain on the outside but inside it contains 123 illustrations and instructions on how to administer basic first aid, and an inscription that tells us this manual originally belonged to Miss Wittiscase who lived near Newtown in Wales and was donated to the British Red Cross in 1984.
We can never know how many times this First Aid Manual was used to help those in need but its existence reminds us of the extensive work of the British Red Cross who are not only committed to sending aid to help national crises and disasters but are also committed to providing the tools and training to help in individual emergencies, overseas and at home.
This First Aid Manual may have only cost 1 shilling to buy in 1912, but its worth as a tool in the wake of an emergency is priceless.
Audio recording by Emily Gilbert (Volunteer), Birmingham.
