Description
Small woollen doll dressed as 'Uncle Sam' in red and white striped trousers, a blue and white waistcoat and blue tailcoat, with tall white hat. There is a safety pin on the reverse of the doll so that is can be worn as a brooch.

History
This type of doll, called a 'Wooly', was made by the Vancouver Prisoners of War Branch, Canadian Red Cross as a fundraiser during the First World War. On the price list (ref: 2010/1) this doll was sold at $0.50.

The character of Uncle Sam is thought to have originated around 1812 and over time became a symbol of America and American patriotism.
