Princess Mary, at the age of 17, undertook an active role in helping those in need during the First World War. She visited hospitals and welfare organisations and worked as a VAD at the Great Ormond Street Hospital. In 1926, she became the first commandant-in-chief of British Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachments.
