Black and white photograph showing the Norfolk/74 Voluntary Aid Detachment in Walsingham. Princess Mary is with the commandant of the Detachment, Miss Elsie W. Griffith. Names of other VADs listed include Mrs Walker, Rudd, Coutton, Bottomley, Bond, Pucks, Cattell, Cornish, Flint-Wright and Dach.

Princess Mary, at the age of 17, undertook an active role in helping those in need during the First World War. She visited hospitals and welfare organisations and worked as a VAD at the Great Ormond Street Hospital. In 1926, she became the first commandant-in-chief of British Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachments.
