History
The first Royal Charter of the British Red Cross was granted by King Edward VII in 1908. A petition, signed by Queen Alexandra as president of the British Red Cross for the granting of a Royal Charter, was submitted to the King. The Privy Council approved this on 1 August 1908, and the Charter was approved by letters patent under the Great Seal on 3 September 1908.

King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, patron and president respectively of the British Red Cross, had actively encouraged negotiations to bring together the various bodies concerned with Red Cross work throughout the United Kingdom and other parts of the Empire.
