History
Queen Mary became president of the British Red Cross in 1925.

To help the relief work of the Red Cross during the First World War, Queen Mary, like other Royal Family Members, helped with fundraising for the sick and wounded. She also showed her support for the Red Cross by visiting hospitals to meet volunteers and patients.

During the First World War, work parties were set up by voluntary groups to help supply hospitals with items such as bandages and clothing. Queen Mary's Needlework Guild (QMNG) was one of these voluntary organisations that supplied gifts and comforts to troops in the field and sick and wounded soldiers in hospitals. Items included pyjamas, bed jackets, bed socks, operation stockings, bags, bandages and dressings.

QMNG worked alongside work parties coordinated by the Joint War Committee of the British Red Cross and Order of St John and work parties coordinated by a special department of the War Office.
