History
After the declaration of war on 4 August 1914, the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St.John of Jerusalem continued to work separately and to make separate appeals for funds. It was then decided that, in the interests of efficiency and economy and in order to facilitate the use by the Army Council of both services, they should pool their resources. A formal agreement between the two organisations dated 24 October 1914 was made forming the Joint War Committee of the British Red Cross and the Order of St John of Jerusalem.
