Description
Inspired by the journeys of the young EmpowHER women and girls, Thea was encouraged to take up a new skill herself, buying a second-hand iPad to try her hand at digital drawing. "It's almost a digital tracing paper. I chose to do the patch on Ilhan Omar, the representative for Minnesota in the USA. I'd seen a video of her saying the quote, 'I don't want a seat at the table, I want to ensure that we're continuously building new tables', and to me, that captured what a lot of the young women and girls on EmpowHER were doing. They were leading on change and creating opportunities for themselves, and their perceptions changed too."
The finished EmpowHER quilt is an incredible representation of the experiences of young women and girls through 2020 and 2021. When people see it, Thea hopes they will take away a feeling of inspiration and be encouraged to make a difference in their own communities. "[I want people] to feel empowered themselves to make a change to things they are passionate about. No change is ever too small."

History
Thea joined UK Youth, the lead partner of the EmpowHER programme, as a Programme Coordinator. Overseeing much of the programme, she was keen to work with young people directly as she had done in previous roles.
"It was bringing young women and girls together monthly and creating opportunities for them to influence the programme and support others with their social action journeys. We also had pitch days which were Dragons' Den-style, where the young women and girls would pitch for funding to deliver their social action projects... The atmosphere was so supportive. Young women who didn't know each other were saying, 'you've got this!'"
