Description
Brassard worn by Mrs Grace Fitzgerald of the East Lancashire Red Cross during her service in Egypt, stamped 'Alexandria' 26 July 1915. Mrs Fitzgerald served as a nurse for seven months on the wards of No. 19 General Hospital, Egypt and also assisted with the Red Cross Buffet at Cairo station.
In a letter to Mrs Fitzgerald from the Secretary of the Malta, Egypt and Near East Commission, 21 August 1916, accepting her resignation as a worker in Egypt on her return to England, it is stated: 'I am told by the Authorities that they had nothing but praise for the good work which you did...' and that she: '...worked indefatigably in connection with the Red Cross Buffet' at Cairo Station.
